Forging the Veil-Step

A look at the traversal-combat system that lets Eira phase between layers of the world without breaking readability.

Devlog cover placeholder focused on combat silhouettes and sigils.

One mechanic, three jobs

The Veil-Step began as a traversal idea and ended up becoming the foundation for combat rhythm, puzzle gating, and exploration shortcuts.

Whenever possible, we want a mechanic to pay rent in several parts of the game. That keeps the control language small while letting mastery feel expressive.

Protecting the screen read

A phase-shift ability can become visual mush very quickly, so we made sure the before-and-after state reads in under a second.

The shift darkens the environment, cools the palette, and emphasizes only the elements that changed. The goal is tension, not spectacle for its own sake.

  • Enemy windups remain readable in both layers.
  • Collision changes are telegraphed before the player commits.
  • Sound cues do as much work as the visual effects.
